In Batman vs. Superman, Superman selflessly gives his life to save the world and defeat Doomsday, and the last picture you saw of the superhero was of him in a black casket sporting a silver ‘S’ logo. All hope was lost until the last frame showing dirt levitating from the casket appears, and we remember that Cavill still has an active contract with the studio.
As a fan teaser, Cavill posted an image on his Instagram account. It came with a simple caption of #Superman. The close-up shot of the costume shows a part of the famous symbol “S” on his chest in solid black. For fans, this isn’t something unfamiliar as the black costume was the one the Son of Krypton returned in after his death in Death of Superman, where he died in the arms of Lois Lane after the battle with Doomsday.
For avid fans, this could mean a few things. In the comics, Superman doesn’t really die during the battle with Doomsday, he almost dies, but then is regenerated. To speed up his regeneration process, he exchanges he blue-red suit for a black suit that can absorb solar power more effectively.
Aside from the regeneration theory, the black suit could also mean that an evil twin of Superman could soon be upon us, Brutaal, the evil creation of Darkseid. Or it could be an indication of Superman’s regeneration and a battle with Kal-El’s evil twin!
The Justice League is expected to hit theaters in November 2017. It will star Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and possibly, Henry Cavill as ???.
