In an interview with Australia’s Sunrise morning show on May 23, Tom Cruise confirmed the long-rumored sequel of his 1986 film Top Gun.
“You know what? I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year,” he revealed. “It’s happening. It is definitely happening.”
Speculations of this highly-anticipated sequel started January last year when film producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of him and Tom together with a caption: “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”
As of now, there are no further details on the much-awaited sequel except that it might probably focus on Maverick’s life for the past 30 years.
Just recently, Bruckheimer shared: “[Cruise and I] talked a little bit about Top Gun. He’s excited, he’d love to do it, and Paramount, of course, would like to do it. So once we get all the ducks in a row, hopefully we’ll bring it to the screen.”
“Listen, it’s an iconic character that [Cruise] helped create, so I think we would like to see what happened to Maverick for the last 30 years,” he further revealed.
Top Gun is the story of a hotshot fighter pilot Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell who attends the best Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School.
