After the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney revealed its plan to continually feed fans more adventures by releasing a Star Wars story every year. These movies heralded as the Star Wars Anthology Series may not be directly connected to the core series, but are expected to introduce new characters, expand the central story line, and provide back story to some of our favorite core characters.
On December 16th, 2016, we will get to see Disney’s first attempt to expand the Star Wars franchise when Rogue One (subtitled A Star Wars Story) will hit the big screen. Rogue One, directed by Gareth Edwards, is expected to provide a history of the Rebel spies who stole the plans to the Empire’s Death Star. Dated before the original 1977 Star Wars, the movie will focus on a band of rebels led by Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones) and tasked with gathering intelligence of the Death Star, so it can be destroyed. This motley band of rogue operatives steal the plans of the Death Star which are used for the mission that gives Luke Skywalker a chance to blow it up, as seen in the original Star Wars movie.
You can expect to see a lot of new faces and characters in Rogue One. Academy Winner Forest Whitaker plays a wise mentor, Diego Luna (the star of Y Tu Mama Tambien) is Erso’s right-hand man, and Hong Kong action star, Donnie Yen, is a fighting force to reckoned with. There will also be a few new villains. Ben Mendelsohn will take a role as an Imperial officer.
Rogue One has a very nostalgic feel. It is exciting to see a film that brings back memorable pieces from the original Star Wars movies like the Death Star, AT-AT walkers, and even some of the original costume designs. There’s so much to look forward to with this film, especially a badass heroine that brings some intrigue and spirit to the force.
