In the upcoming DC Batman movie, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we can expect to see some pretty big changes in the character lines and background scenery. Ben Affleck will be taking over the reins of Batman from Christian Bale. Batman will be battling it out with another superhero, Superman. Alfred Pennyworth, Batman (Bruce Wayne’s) faithful butler-turned-father figure will be played by none other than veteran British actor, Jeremy Irons, and he promises Alfred will be a more action oriented and prevalent character.
Henry Cavil made his debut as the superhero alien in the 2013 blockbuster hit, ‘Man of Steel’, so Henry doesn’t have to convince anyone that he is the right man to wear tights for this job. Ben Affleck, on the other hand, is taking on the Batman role for the first time, and he is filling some pretty large shoes with the previous screen versions of the character. Some don’t really think he has what it takes to portray the brooding playboy with the darkness needed to be convincing and relate-able. This opportunity will be unique for Ben, but if his interview with Entertainment Weekly is any indication, Ben has it covered. He has a plan to the take the best qualities from each of the prior incarnations of Batman and truly make it his own, while incorporating a more mature and cynical perspective of the caped crusader.
The main conflict of the movie is between Batman and Superman. Batman thinks Superman it too powerful and could abuse his power to ultimately destroy humanity either personally or by bringing other aliens to the planet. Superman being the eagle scout farm boy, thinks that Batman goes too far with his willingness to attain Justice at any cost. Ben Affleck sums up the central theme of the movie very well when he said: “Rаthеr thаn just Аliеn Vs. Prеdаtоr, whеrе yоu hаvе twо mоnstеrs аnd thеy’rе gоnnа fight, yоu hаvе twо pеоplе whо rеаlly truly bеliеvе thеy аrе dоing sоmеthing hеrоic аnd nеcеssаry in thеir cоnflict.” I think we can say with certainty that we can expect to see some heroic battles between the two, and only time will tell which strong willed persona comes out on top.
Just like Ben, Jeremy Irons is new to the role of Batman’s butler, Alfred. Jeremy Irons is stepping in for the highly revered Michael Caine. There is a lot of excitement around Jeremy taking over the role. If his past performances are any indication, Jeremy is a man of action that can physically and mentally intimidate even the most fearless opponents. Jeremy Irons dished out the details of his role in a recent Empire interview and shared that Alfred becomes a more central themed character, perhaps with a dark past of his own. The new and improved Alfred apparently has had special forces training which makes him more bad ass than ever and capable of handling anything thrown at him. No longer does the butler reside in notable Wayne Manor, mostly because it has been seemingly burnt and condemned for a reason not yet disclosed, but in a slick lakeside residence decked out with special ops gear. Life must be good when you have access to Bruce Wayne’s cash.
With the character changes and amazing story line, I think we can expect another blockbuster hit. We will also get to meet additional superhero characters, likely expected to be more notable in the later movies, like Justice League. The star studded cast will include Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, along with a bevvy of other A-list actors. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is expected to be released in theaters March 25, 2016.
